&lt;p&gt;The envelope had been there since March. His daughter had written EARL on it instead of Dad, which gave him some idea of its contents. He kept it unopened between the tax notices and the owner&amp;rsquo;s manual. The Ford kept its own papers there too, service records going back to the years when service could still have helped it.
